Hailing from the hills of Western New York, Dave Appel grew up making music. From his days in rock and roll bands to bluegrass jam bands, Dave always connected to music in a raw and personal way. While at Fredonia State University he picked up the mandolin and fell in love. Upon graduating, Dave sacrificed his love for the arts and became a pilot in the United States Air Force in order to provide for his family. He traveled the world for 24 years with the Air Force. In 2005, his wife Alicia gave him a dulcimer kit for Christmas. He enjoyed putting together the kit so much that he decided to try his hand at crafting mandolins and later, guitars. One year later, Dave established Scanlon Bros Music. In the fall of 2008, Dave retired from the Air Force, and relocated to Ft. Worth, TX. Today he builds, restores, and repairs instruments from his home workshop. Dave and Alicia have been married for 29 years and have three grown children.
